Not a bit like Leatherhead.
August 2006
Work begins this week on the house of Andonina Syruwatsu and this will be number seven The women are very excited about this and it is a tangible and satisfactory thing to do. Apart from Rosemary's house the others are pretty much finished and the beds and other equipement is in place. I may get four of the eight beds that we ordered.
School opens September 6th but at present the classrooms are full of maize. In fact the town is full of maize. Every flat surface has maize drying and at school we will have about 60 bags which should feed the children for the year.
The name Kakamega means something like "we are eating ugali (maize ) with our hands" and certainly everyone here loves their maize. Still puts me in mind of wallpaper paste.
Not much news of the rats so I'm hoping they are dead by now Andrew thinks they might be breeding - a cheering thought! In the meantime we have four Beatrix Potter mice dancing across the sitting room nightly.
Love Liz x
