The aim of this programme is to encourage self-help and to decrease reliance on outside aid. The women involved are encouraged and given the resources to start up small businesses, selling items such as vegetables, fruits, sugarcane, roasting maize, milk, charcoal and second-hand clothes. From the profits of this scheme, the women are able to live and support their families, and also pay some rent. Another part of this programme is the boda-boda scheme. Boda-bodas are bicycles which carry a passenger on the back and are used as taxis. 10 men were provided with bicycles so that they could start their own boda-boda business, and earn money to provide for their families. So far, the scheme has been a complete success, and their standard of living has increased dramatically.
